D. Maria II Theatre starts “National Odyssey” throughout 2023
Cycle will run across the country with shows, activities for schools and projects with local communities.
The theatre closes for works, but opens to the country. The D. Maria II National Theatre (DMNT) will start a journey from north to south of Portugal.
The initiative, which the institution called “National Odyssey”, was presented this Wednesday and will pass through ninety-three municipalities of mainland Portugal and islands, integrating “hundreds of proposals, including shows, activities for schools, projects with local communities, training, book launches and more”: “DMNT will be present throughout the national territory, throughout one year, intervening in regions where there is already a strong creative dynamic, but also being a catalyst for the cultural life of communities where there is less access to artistic practices, with particular focus on the country’s interior,” adds the theatre.
In all, there will be five programmes (“Plays”, “Acts”, “Fruits”, “Scenarios” and “Nexos”) that encompass all the proposals. Theatre will be the strong point of the programme, with three own productions, three co-productions with companies outside the Porto-Lisbon area, four co-productions with emerging artists, two co-productions with artists of national projection, one show for young audiences and, also, three international shows
The “Odyssey” will start in January 2023, when the theatre will close for rehabilitation works, starting in the North region. From April to June, the activities will focus on the central region and on the islands in July and September (Azores and Madeira, respectively). The Southern region will be the last to receive the initiative, with activities planned between the months of October and December
