It is already certain that Netflix will make available a paid plan with advertising, but it is not yet fully known what this offer will consist of. And the rumours that are coming out show a platform a little different from the one we are used to.

One of the features of the platform is the possibility of being able to download content to a device and watch it offline. Only, according to TechCrunch, this functionality will not be available on the cheapest version. According to the digital technology magazine, this feature was discovered by programmer Steve Moser when examining the code of the streaming giant’s iPhone app and who published these findings on his personal blog

Users of the platform will be prevented from downloading content: “Downloads available on all plans except Netflix with ads”, it said on the code. The tier will have ads targeted to each user and it won’t be possible to “skip “: “We just need a few details to make sure you get the most relevant ads on Netflix. It’ll be really quick, we promise!”, reads another text of the code

Reacting to this information, the company was sparse on words, stating that these findings were currently “speculation”: “We are still in the early stages of deciding how to launch a lower-priced ad-supported option and no decision has been made,” a Netflix spokesperson assured TechCrunch.

The new tier is expected to be available early next year, but this news could be a glimpse of what Netflix‘s offering will be. The digital magazine suggests that this may be deliberate: removing the option to download to the plan with advertising may make users stick to their current plans. In addition, the streaming giant announced in July that some content may not be available on the plan with advertising, but gave no clues as to which content will be affected. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos noted that the company is “in talks with the studios”, but “if we launched the plan today, subscribers to the plan with ads would have a great experience”. “The Wall Street Journal” advanced that Warner Bros. (owner of HBO Max), Universal and Sony Pictures are some of the studios in negotiations with Netflix

Netflix’s new strategy comes at a time when the company is facing an unprecedented crisis. In one quarter alone, the company lost 970,000 subscribers and TechCrunch also highlights the decline in the quality of entertainment on the service, despite the higher number of shows: while HBO and HBO Max content received 140 nominations, Netflix received only 105. In all, the company says it has 220.67 million subscribers and expects to gain another million in the third quarter

In Portugal, Netflix is the leader in streaming platforms. According to data from a study promoted by Multidados in March, from a sample of one thousand people, the platform is the most accessed, with 79.1% of preferences, followed by HBO Max, with 25.2%. However, 21.6% of Portuguese subscribers said they did not know whether they wanted to keep their subscription
