Journalist Daniel Deusdado considered that RTP should give up the broadcasting rights of Primeira Liga matches on international channels. The former programming director of RTP 1, RTP Informação (former RTP 3) and RTP Internacional considers that the value that SPORT TV Portugal asks for the continuation of the broadcasting agreement is disadvantageous for the public broadcasting station and that football is no longer so important for the Portuguese community aboard.

SPORTTV Portugal “sells the fat of sliced ham for the price of prosciutto” – Deusdado

The journalist’s position comes in an article published this week in the newspaper Diário de Notícias: Deusdado considers that the mission of the international channels is not compromised with the end of the transmission of matches. Explaining how the television market works in relation to sports, Daniel Deusdado says that RTP International and similar channels “have long been inhibited from broadcasting national team games in official matches because the rights are sold country by country – and there is no possible compatibility with channels that broadcast via satellite dish to entire continents”. The situation also extends to other international competitions such as the Champions League or the Europa League

Furthermore, the ex-director says that the premium sports channel has a privileged position in the negotiation process: “When RTP Internacional tries to buy some national football for its antenna, it also has a competitor in the seller of the rights”, he underlines, adding that SPORT TV Portugal chooses the “best game” to broadcast. “There is never a Sporting-Benfica or a FC Porto-Benfica game for emigrants, besides there can’t be any Benfica home game because the rights belong only to Benfica TV“, he adds

The responsible even says that the premium channel is selling “leftovers of football” for 1,7 million euros, the equivalent to half of the budget of the international channel, leading him to conclude that the business interests “only SPORT TV, sells the fat of sliced ham for the price of prosciutto”.

Deusdado adds that the community in the Diaspora has little interest in football because “either they already have SPORT TV via satellite dish or they go to the “Portuguese bar” in the area to watch the big game”. Added to this, Portuguese associations are more likely to want the money used to buy the broadcasting rights of the games to be “applied in content about emigrant communities”.

“RTP is taking the right attitude by giving up this subjugation”, concludes the journalist

The agreement between RTP and SPORT TV Portugal to broadcast Primeira Liga football matches ended last season. The Portuguese public broadcaster is negotiating with the premium sports channel, but until now, there is still no agreement that would allow the broadcasting of the matches. It should be remembered that the championship kicked off at the beginning of August
